NPR gets Social

Marketing Vox is reporting that NPR is finally bringing social media into its site. Users are able to upload profiles, photos and friend one another. As an avid NPR podcast fan the move makes sense. And, as Marketing Vox notes, it’s also a first-step in attracting younger audiences which represent the future in fundraising. It’s going to be fantastic to watch how they elevate storytelling.

Got this great email from Trent Reznor today (we’re close pals). He wants feedback:

“As we’ve moved from the familiar world of record labels and BS into the unknown world of doing everything yourself, we’ve realized it would benefit us and our ability to interact with you if we knew more about what you want, what you like, what you look like naked, etc. I know it’s a pain in the ass but we’d truly appreciate it if you’d take a minute and help us out.”

AMC says Mad Men must not Twitter

For the last week or so Brad and I have been following the cast of Mad Men on Twitter. It was a weird not sure how this works kinda feeling. The characters were coming to life in our own world…only they have never heard of the Internet. It was hard to wrap your head around, but altogether fascinating to see what they were doing.

AdRants is now reporting AMC has asked Twitter to remove @don_draper and @peggyolsen immediately. While I understand AMC’s position, I also know how much fun we were having following the characters we’ve come to love. It’s a shame to keep these characters in a box. Are we ever going to reach a point where creativity is allowed to stay in its maverick, organic state?

Shiny, Shiny…Barthes would love this

Now that the Olympics are over, I’d like to offer a PAUSE of sorts. A lot of magnificent things happened – I’m not one to deny that I was absolutely caught up in the Phelps mania – seriously – he was amazing. But with all the shiny, shiny – I was on vacation during the opening ceremonies and no less then five people asked if I had seen it – it strikes me that we have let who China is slip away from us. With all the shiny, shiny experience there was quite a bit of manufacturing – mostly through technology. China needed the world to see a fantastic and omnipotent games – their human rights issues needed to remain off-off-off-Broadway and then take a train to a bus.

Everything about Beijing needed to be pristine – so pristine that the little girl who sung during the opening ceremonies was actually a lip syncer. Apparently the other girl wasn’t pristine and cute enough. The fireworks – many were digitally added post-ceremony for airing on NBC. The city itself was transformed, from new buildings (usurping older ones, often family-run businesses) to duct taping brand names (even on toilets).

All is not as it appears. (The games have been a Barthes heaven really.) As we continue into our digital existences, I hope that we do not lose sight of the smoke and mirrors. Yes, China gave us an opening and closing ceremonies the like we haven’t seen. They also needed to in order for us to turn our attention away from Tianamen Square, Tibet, a controlled Internet and press. Etc. Etc. Etc.

Abby and I used to keep track of Roni’s English-translation quotes (she is Israeli). The use and mis-use was captured in all of their hilarity on our quote board. Since we’ve moved, the quote board has disappeared. But the hilarity definitely lives on.

Today Mary IM’d me that Roni is pitching something for Twitter. Only she’s calling it Tweeter.

This is no gravity v. graffiti – but these beautiful little pieces of fun need to have a home – so I am officially keeping track here.
